Since 2019, the island of Pellworm has been preparing to join the surrounding biosphere reserve. As part of this process, many Pellworm residents have been involved in a wide range of biosphere projects for a sustainable future for their island - and continue to do so. The more than 20 biosphere projects include a wide range of environmental projects (e.g. insect-friendly island or sustainable mobility), economic projects (such as the establishment of an island butchery or tourist offers for the early and late season) and cultural projects (island cinema or Star Island).
Taken together, these projects should make the sustainable development of the island visible, fill the ‘Pellworm Biosphere’ with life and make an important contribution to ensuring that Pellworm remains a good place to live and work in the long term. The National Park Authority accompanied the process from the development of the biosphere on Pellworm to the application to UNESCO. Recognition was granted in mid-June 2023.
