Cities in East Central Europe over the course of the 20th century
May 16, 2025 - May 18, 2025

Many cities in Central and Eastern Europe are still characterised by their multinational history. Since 1989/91, the identity of today's urban society has once again been determined by the confrontation with its historical heritage. We present cities in East Central Europe from different national perspectives and try to uncover the layers of memory of the inhabitants. How is each city perceived by one nation and the other? Where are there points of reference for a nation, such as monuments, buildings and squares? And how do we deal with this heritage today? Is the ‘history of others’ accepted or devalued?
